Morna International College celebrates its annual charity football tournament in aid of the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association

  • This sporting event will take place next Monday, 2 March, at the Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera football ground, with the special participation of the 2023 Spanish Freestyle Football Champion, Joan Sitjar

Morna International College is organising its annual charity tournament ‘Football Event IV’ on Monday, 2 March, at the Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera football ground. The event includes a league among students from all year groups, from Year 3 of primary school through to Sixth Form, a staff vs. students football match and, as a new addition this year, a girls’ football match featuring primary school pupils. The event will also include the special appearance of the 2023 Spanish Freestyle Football Champion, Joan Sitjar. Tickets for the event, which this year welcomes for the first time the collaboration of the ELEVATE programme and A. E. Santa Gertrudis football club, are priced at a five-euro donation, with all proceeds going directly to the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association, IFCC.

This charity event brings together students, teachers and parents every year to enjoy a full day of sport and community spirit, giving students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and carry out meaningful projects such as this charity event. This year’s tournament is led by student delegate Carlie Torres Harwood, the KS5 Student Council and the Bronze Award participants of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The competition will kick off at 10:00 with the primary and secondary school teams from Morna International College, culminating in a triangular tournament between Sixth Form students, parents and teachers. The day will conclude with a penalty shootout to decide the overall winner.

For the first time, this charity initiative will benefit from the collaboration of the ELEVATE Programme and A.E. Santa Gertrudis Fútbol Club, which will field two registered teams to give students the chance to compete against outside opponents. The ELEVATE Programme runs after-school sessions and holiday training camps, led by former Premier League defender and ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa player Luke Young, alongside former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Walsall FC player and UEFA-licensed coach Keenen Meakin Richards.

The day will also feature the special appearance of the 2023 Spanish Freestyle Football Champion and finalist in European and world competitions, Joan Sitjar.

Fun activities and charity raffle

Morna International College encourages its students to lead initiatives with social impact. With this in mind, they have designed this day as both a sporting competition and a charity celebration, with the aim of raising funds for the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association (IFCC), with whom they have maintained a close collaborative relationship for years. IFCC works to support cancer patients and their families across the Pitiüses islands.

Both students and the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) will be actively involved throughout the day in organising a range of activities to support this charity: from a breakfast stall to a barbecue, a cake sale, bouncy castles sponsored by Cachirulo y sus amigos with the support of Ibiza Kids Camp, live entertainment and cheerleaders to liven up the event.

At the end of the tournament, a charity raffle will take place with prizes donated by local businesses and collaborators, including an iPhone 17 Pro donated by MIC, a week at the ELEVATE Football Camp, a PlayStation 5 with FC 26 donated by COTXU Construcciones, a signed shirt from UD Ibiza football club along with two VIP tickets to one of their matches, an electric bicycle donated by Es Jardiners, a stay in the Marrakesh Suite for six at Pikes Ibiza and a special experience for six at Ibiza 528.

Additional sponsors include Ibiza Estates, official kit sponsor for the Staff and Parents team, and Aniofe, barbecue sponsor for the event.

About the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association

The Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association, IFCC, has been working for 25 years to support patients and families from the Pitiüses islands throughout their cancer treatment, as well as providing medical supplies, informational materials and funding for travel and treatment outside the islands.

This year, IFCC, in collaboration with Santa Eulària des Riu Town Council, has launched a pilot project called Hospice — a companionship service aimed at people with cancer in the final stages of life and their families, offered free of charge to oncology patients in the municipality with a life expectancy of less than twelve months.

In 2025, the Association funded a new vehicle for the Palliative Care Unit, as well as 46 new armchairs and auxiliary tables for the waiting room of the day oncology unit and the radiology department. IFCC also continues to promote a new campaign across the islands to raise awareness of colon cancer screening, with the aim of improving the participation rate, which stood at just 28% in 2024.
